Seen it all: The turbulent history of Habitat
The development of Habitat has had its ups and downs. While filming Alien Workshop’s legendary Photosynthesis video, then Workshop filmmaker Joe Castrucci got the idea for a new brand. With the support of Big Boss Rob Dyrdek, nothing stood in the way of this new little sister company. Habitat Skateboards quickly made its way into the heart of the skateboard scene. Therefore, it was all the more crass, when it was announced that DNA Distribution would close their doors forever, leaving Habitat without distribution and hanging by a thread. While the workshop disappeared from the scene for some time, Habitat managed to make the leap to Tum Yeto. Meanwhile, Habitat has been working together with Official and distributes their stuff to all the skate shops of the world that know good hardware when they see it.
From the camera to the paintbrush: Castrucci and the Habitat Designs
Since Joe Castrucci had actually applied for a job in the design department at the workshop, it was clear that the graphics for Habitat would come from his pen. The focus was always on the coexistence of city and nature. The preference for raw street skating and big city jungle, combined with the focus on green living, give the decks from Habitat Skateboards their unmistakable look.
In addition to their own designs, Habitat also always has unusual collaborations with artists outside of the skating world. Be it a deck series in collaboration with Pink Floyd or a complete collection of the cult TV series Twin Peaks, with Habitat, there’s something for everyone. So keep your eyes peeled! The fact that the brand also places great importance on creating alluring visualisations of moving images is unmistakably demonstrated in videos like Mosaic (2003), Inhabitants (2007) and Origin (2010) with their first-class skating.
